Embracing Change: The Summer to Fall Home Transition
While it still may be warm here in SoCal, I like to embrace the new season with cozy and layered designs in my home. As the heat of summer gradually gives way to the crisp, cool breeze of fall, it's time to embark on a journey of transformation within your home.
The seasonal change from summer to fall is about infusing your living space with warm, cozy vibes. Let’s explore some ideas to help you smoothly move from the vibrant colors and open windows of summer to the earthy tones and snug ambiance of fall.
1. Colors
Fall thoughts inspire me to change up my home decor from light summer blues and whites to warmer tones. I never go in for too much orange and rust but rather for deep grays, greens, and creams. I always look to bring in the outdoors inside and use the colors around me as inspiration. Replace those bright, beachy cushions and pastel throws with these warmer, autumnal hues. For a little Halloween fun, you can swap out those warmer toned throw pillows for a spooky theme of orange and black, for just the right amount of Halloween in the home. We just received our Halloween new arrivals - witch throws, skeleton decor, and Happy Halloween pillows.
2. It’s in the Decor Details
I like to begin my fall transition with smaller items in my home - accessories, pillows, and bedding. Come by the Pacific Palisades shop to see our new fall bedding display pictured below! The best part is that it’s completely customizable. Consider adding cozy blankets and plush, textured pillows to your couch and chairs. Don't forget to incorporate fall-themed decor like pumpkins, gourds, and seasonal wreaths to give your home an instant autumn feel.
Look at your shelves. Can you switch out some of the photos that have faded from the sun, grab a new frame like this denim & silver enamel picture frame, and add a photo? Our new service called Drop and Frame allows you to update photos in your home from your phone with the latest family adventures and drop them into our site. We’ll then ship a new frame with your image, ready to be displayed.
Along with photos, I like to have my books look tidy on my bookshelves. Whenever I introduce a new book (see our collection from Assouline), I see if there is one or two I can donate to the local library. Organize your books by color and size so that they look neat and chic. Try changing the orientation by laying some books down with a beautiful crystal on top so that all of the books are interesting to look at and don’t appear to be too heavy.
3. Create Warmth and Festive Table Settings
If you love design then you must love changing up your table settings. Fall is the time of year to create memories at your table. Wooden cutting boards, trays, table runners, dinner napkins, and napkin rings are a great way to add the fall feels to your dinner table. Try our assorted Feather Dinner napkins for a festive fall feel that will bring your guests together at the dinner table.
Pull out wood chargers, like this bark edge wood charger we just received for fall, and Riviera Linen napkins in one of the many deep color options to set your table for a casual Friday night get-together. You can never have too many candles. These Echo Lake Hurricanes are perfect for a sideboard or island. Add some flameless candles on a timer; your home will glow each evening as the days get shorter.
Along with your table setting, embrace the flavors of fall in your kitchen by incorporating seasonal produce into your meals. Apples, pumpkins, and squashes are in abundance during this time of year and can be used to create delicious soups, pies, and casseroles. Display a bowl of fresh apples or a pumpkin centerpiece in your kitchen.
3. Outdoor Transition
Any kind of leaves that are cut and brought inside create such a great vibe on an entry table or coffee table (here is vase inspiration). This is an inexpensive and easy mood changer. My favorites are Olive tree branches and small maple tree branches. Use a vase that is not transparent. Height is important. Consider placing fall flowers and plants, like mums and ornamental cabbage, in your garden or on your porch to maintain a touch of vibrancy in your outdoor spaces. You can also opt for a garland! This mixed-dried botanical garland is a new arrival and would be a great piece of accent decor in a farmhouse-style home for Thanksgiving and fall.
3. Fall Scents and Smells
Engage your sense of smell in the transition from summer to fall by introducing seasonal scents into your home. While it's always a great idea to have our Elizabeth Lamont signature fragrance line on hand all year round, fall calls for the OG terra-cotta candle collection. It is what put us on the map after all, and we have expanded with so many new items. We also have the Elizabeth Lamont Glacier candles that will carry you from fall to the holidays with the crisp clean scent of the mountains, one of my personal favorites. You can also use essential oil diffusers with fragrances like pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or apple pie. These aromas instantly evoke the comforting feeling of fall and create a welcoming atmosphere.
By incorporating these tips and infusing your living space with the warmth, coziness, and inviting atmosphere of fall, you can create a haven that you'll look forward to returning to as the days grow shorter and cooler.
The transition from summer to fall is a delightful time of change and transformation, both in nature and within our homes. I saw pumpkins at my local market yesterday and although it will be 86 on Wednesday, I couldn’t resist bringing some home. Also, It's never too early to start thinking about Halloween. This year I’ll have some kids from my new neighborhood to delight with goolish decor from the shop that’s brand new. Embrace the beauty of this transitional season, and let your home reflect the magic of fall!
