My Home Renovation Pt.3: Renovation Realities

My Home Renovation Pt.3: Renovation Realities

If I’m being honest… we are not exactly “on schedule.”

Even when you’re at the helm of your own renovation, surprises happen. And in a 70+ year old home, surprises tend to be hiding behind walls and under floors.

We’ve uncovered quite a bit of sloppy old work especially underground plumbing that needed to be redone and rerouted entirely. It’s costly. It’s time consuming. And it’s absolutely necessary. Old houses deserve to be restored correctly, not patched temporarily.

The exciting news? I ordered my doors and windows from Pinky’s Iron Doors, and they arrive next week. They are large, steel-framed, and beautifully minimal. The metal sightlines are so thin that the views will feel uninterrupted. I cannot wait to see that light pour in.

We’re also installing heated flooring in the bathrooms. I had it in my Malibu home, and once you’ve experienced warm floors on a cold morning, there is no going back. It’s not just luxurious, it’s practical. As heat rises, it warms the room more efficiently. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

What I’m Doing in the Garden

The oak trees are becoming the unexpected stars of this property. I have so many now that I need to actually count them.

We’ve assessed their health (thankfully, they’re strong), though they’re more delicate than I realized. Interestingly, they also offer natural fire protection because of the way they hold moisture and create a barrier around the structure.

The fallen leaves and debris have turned into rich, healthy mulch (nature doing what it does best). I’m working toward a landscape plan that feels natural but intentional. Last week I tossed wildflower seed bombs across the property. We’ll see what happens. I’ll report back on whether it’s a wild success or a gentle failure.

What’s Happening in the Shop & Studio

The studio has been buzzing!

Morgan from F. Schumacher & Co. stopped by with their newest fabric collection and a box of cookies from Porto’s Bakery, which may or may not have disappeared immediately. The fabrics are layered, textured, and inspiring. We’ll be adding them to our library soon, and I can’t wait for you to see them in person.

We also met with Peggy from Vietri to review their spring offerings. The new pieces in Luna and Pietra collections are soft and beautiful. The collections have the kind of subtle pattern that makes a table feel fresh without trying too hard. I am particularly fond of the deviled egg plate (a very underrated serving piece, in my opinion).

It feels good to have the studio humming again. There’s something special about creative rhythm.

What’s in My Cart

I’ve been on job sites constantly, which means proper footwear is non-negotiable. Closed-toe, durable, and comfortable. I recently picked up a new pair of Adidas sneakers that can handle a little dirt but still look pulled together.

With all the cold weather, I’ve also been eyeing the toggle jackets from Atorie. The kind that feel timeless and slightly nostalgic.

My new property requires real hands-in-the-soil gardening. I’ve just bought the classic green boots from Hunter Boot Ltd and are on their way. Practical can still be beautiful.

Products I’m Loving

Wallpaper continues to be on my mind. There is so much to be gained from pattern on walls, even on ceilings. It adds depth, story, and warmth in a way paint alone cannot. Read last weeks blog about wallpapers to learn more about choosing the perfect ones for you!

I’m also deep in lighting selections. I’ll share more next week, but for now I’ve been drawn to the outdoor fixtures from Palecek. I love how they are organic, textured, and refined.

Let me know what you think of my minds and love to hear any questions about my new build.

Have a beautiful week.

And as always, Live Beautifully.

xx

Elizabeth
